The world got the news today that Shaq was retiring at the end of his current contract. That means the star Center will play his last NBA game in 2010. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could walk in the big man’s shoes? Twenty million dollars a year, and he knows for certain (sure) when he’s getting out. Getting into a trade often isn’t as difficult as getting out. Picking your entries and executing them brings on a whole set of new choices that are sometimes difficult to manage. But alas, Shaq, the genie from the lamp has shown us the light, given us an example to follow. Forget his lousy, Kobe bashing, rap lyrics and poor free shooting percentages, and look at his strategy to exit the game. He knows now that he will be done in 2010. I am not suggesting you take a position and hold it until Shaq retires. What I am suggesting is that you know your exit point before hand. Now I doubt that he knew when he was going to retire his rookie year. But I have no doubt that he has been planning his retirement for a couple of years or maybe even had the idea when he signed that last Suns deal, and he may even go back on his word. Let’s forget that for a moment and just take a look at the exit. Know where you want o get out on both sides of the deal, at profit and at loss. Always know that before you get in the trade and make sure your trading strategy takes that into consideration. Because when you have already made that decision it makes it a bit easier to hang in there and take all your profits and all your losses.
