I was reading the news this morning and ran across an article about Mr. Ballmer not having ideas to get Microsoft out of its internet black hole. The author was basically making the point that the C.E.O. might not have any good ideas. So he’s trying to buy his way out. I also remembered seeing him act like a crazy lunatic at Corporate meeting. I did a quick search for images of him and found as many crazy nutty pictures of him as I did pictures where he seemed rather down or even depressed.

I would hate to married to that guy, well, except for the yachts and houses and cars. It also reminded me how I sometimes feel after losing trades. I will be in a fine mood, and then a few hours later I‘ll have a losing trade. Now, I know that I am going to have losing trades, so I always try to look at them as business expenses.

Even though I think about them that way , I still can’t help being a little depressed. A long time ago I realized that it was the same feeling I would get when I realized I was wrong after having an argument with someone. That’s when I started keeping a trade journal.

After every trade, I create an entry in this journal. I talk about the reasons I entered the trade. I also look at a few reasons that the trade failed if it did. I found that this simple exercise helped even out my moods. Don’t rely on your P/L sheet to tell you how you are doing. Use your journal to go back and periodically look at your entries. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your trading will improve.
