I have always thought that science was cool PDF Print E-mail

I have always thought that science was cool. I have especially liked it when you inadvertently bump into science unexpectedly. This happened to me today. I went to the freezer to get some ice cubes and noticed these little spikes, a kind of stalagmite formed on the top of several of the ice cubes.

Not being one to let it go at “well that’s cool”, I headed to the web and searched up ice cube stalagmites. Within 5 minutes I had all the answers I needed to explain the phenomena. The most interesting information I found was at a site where several experiments were done to create them intentionally. At this site you can find two movies showing the growth of these spikes in controlled situations.

It may have seemed like a waste of time to pursue the information but I now know something I didn’t before and I always like that!
